Cyclone Freddy is devastating the southern region of Africa. In the last month it has killed more than 400 people: 73 in Mozambique, 17 in Madagascar and 326 in Malawi. Winds of more than 200 km/h and rains have also lashed Zambezia, the Mozambican province where CELIM has been operating for years with its own development projects. For this reason, our NGO has decided to launch a fundraiser to help the local population rebuild houses and infrastructures that have been destroyed. The danger, by the way, is not over. The cyclone is an unprecedented weather event. Forming in early February off the coast of Australia, it made an east-west crossing across the Indian Ocean of 8,000 km, becoming one of the longest cyclones on record. On February 21, Freddy made her first landfall on the east coast of Madagascar, killing seven. It then struck Mozambique, killing ten people. It finally backtracked and struck a second time in Madagascar in early March, killing ten more people and again, in Mozambique, where another 63 people died, and then Malawi. It is currently still active and there is a risk that it will cause further damage.
